GENERAL CURATORIAL MANIFESTO: The monumental canvas Genesis (Генезис) by Margo Alison Subbotina operates as the philosophical and aesthetic vanguard of her foundational series, The Shell (Скорлупа). Drawing from her rigorous academic training at the Surikov Art Institute and her research in visual culture at Moscow State University, Subbotina synthesizes Renaissance iconography, physical alchemy, and theoretical neuroscience into a singular metaphysical artifact.
The artwork executes a radical deconstruction of Sandro Botticelli’s high-renaissance masterpiece, Madonna del Magnificat (Мадонна Магнификат). Stripping away the protective theological shell of the historical tondo, Subbotina focuses the epicenter of the trauma directly onto the divine countenance of the Virgin Mary. Venus is absent; in her place stands a monumental, moon-blue egg—a universal totem of origin, pristine consciousness, and uncodified form prior to the imposition of societal masks, surrounded by the fluid, ethereal gestures of Botticelli’s iconic angels.
THE ANATOMY OF MATERIAL DIALOGUE:
Every millimeter of the canvas is a deliberate battlefield of texture, history, and light. The razor-sharp fissure fractures the fresco strictly along the delicate contours of the Madonna’s face. Subbotina executes this structural fracture through heavy architectural putty, sliced meticulously at a 45-degree angle. This precise chamfer operates as a physical light trap: when subjected to directional gallery illumination, the 45-degree bevel causes the embedded 24-karat gold leaf inside the crack to ignite into a piercing, golden halo, contrasting brilliantly against the deep, midnight-blue mass of the egg.

At the fractured heart of the composition lies a pristine, mirror-finish silicate portal measuring exactly 9×9 mm, positioned flush with the putty layers. This microscopic mirror functions as a conceptual singularity, shattering the traditional relationship between the artwork and the observer. As the viewer approaches the canvas to decipher the text being written in the Madonna’s book, the 9-millimeter mirror reflects their own eye back into the void. Ultimately, Genesis ceases to be a flat historical replication; it morphs into an interactive, multi-dimensional boundary zone where classical Renaissance geometry fractures, and the human spirit is forcefully extracted from the «shell of its own illusions».
